Joy Machines

In Joy Machines the audience is hypnotised and comes into contact with a machine that can produce intense sensory experiences of happiness. The work reflects on our increasingly complex – and not necessarily healthy – relationship with new technologies. Sound design: Raudie McLeod.

Duration 45min.

What will happen during the performance?

In the piece, hypnotized audience encounters a machine that can produce happiness with the touch of a button, allowing the hypnotized subjects to go through intense sensory experiences of happiness. The ambiguity of producing a physical state of pleasure and satisfaction by using a machine opens a space to reflect contemporary anxiety, the pursuit of happiness, and our deepening — but often problematic — relationship with technology.

How did you come to create this piece?

The piece I am proposing — and a major part of my artistic practice — is rooted in the exploration of inner journeys. One of the key motivations behind this work is the rapidly shifting socio-political and technological landscape.

Whom would you like to experiece your piece?

Anyone who is willing to be hypnotized and to experience how it can used as an artistic medium.

What one-to-one art means to you as an artist?

For a hypnotic performance, one-to-one is the most immersive and profound format. Addressing an individual rather than a group eliminates the need for generalized language, allowing for a highly personalized approach. Tailoring inductions to the individual’s cognitive and emotional responses leads to a deeper trance state and a more meaningful experience. For me, it’s a rare and cherised opportunity to share my work in an intimate format.

What would you like to say to the audience taking part in the festival:

Although I’m aware that many people have misconceptions regarding to hypnosis, I can assure you that in this piece, no one will lose control, disappear, or do anything against their will. The artwork can be described as a contemplative inner journey, which does not demand other participation than closing one’s eyes, listening, and relaxing.

Nikkanen participated in the One-to-One Art residency in summer 2025, which was implemented by the project’s partner House Collective from Klanjec, Croatia.
The project has been supported by Kone Foundation’s Saari Residence and Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
