Signe Levä: Hands
Signe Levä (FIN)
Hands
A dance of hands, a concert of touch and friction, a wind from one skin to another. A salute, farewell, love and appreciation for my further disabling hands and fingers.
Duration 30min.
In this piece I stimulate the sensorial experiences I practise, to someone else, to another body, as my hands can be on both sides of the person at the same time, providing sensory stimulation; airflow, sound, warmth. Visually arriving at one’s gaze from both sides of the field of vision. The travelling of stimming hands stimulates the senses, as the senses catch the sounds, air flowing, warmth, coming from different directions, at different intensities, drawing a map of where they are.
In the artwork, the performer travels around the guest, simulating what it would be to stim with hands, when the hands are no longer at your disposal. Experiencing the stimulation they provide, with the disconnection of agency. Whilst I’m processing the farewell, it’s also a salute to those whose goodbyes have already been said. Who have welcomed in the new motion, the new limbs, the lived ones. And to those who never said goodbye, its a greeting, a window into my hands.
Description of the work
A dance of hands, a concert of touch and friction, a wind from one skin to another. A salute, farewell, love and appreciation for my further disabling hands and fingers. An admiration for the intricacy these digits have provided.
One body, not as audience or performer, but as a stage, a playground, a recorder. A detailed, sensitive spatial relationship between the organ receiving sensorial stimulation and the source producing it, the volume or intensity scales becoming vast, whilst objectively being perceived as small, limited.
