Whom would you like to experience your work?

I wish for people of all ages and from all kinds of backgrounds, people who are open to try out new kinds of art. I especially hope that the work speaks to those who long for a moment of pause, a connection to their own mind, and the opportunity to share this moment with another person.

What happens during the performance?

Nature Within is an intimate one-to-one installation, where we sit on meditation cushions, side by side with the participant, and watch a real time projection of a mind on the wall. 

The session begins with me acting as a living trigger: I react to the audience and the music and my own state directly alters the visual image of the work. The work comprises interaction: I’m sensitive to the effect others have on me, and this shows in the digital twin that is projected. 

In the piece, you can also try this out: If you wish, you can place an EGG-reader on your head and see how your own thoughts and feelings are transformed into a visual experience. The work is an invitation to creativity, relaxation and inspiration – every encounter is unique and is born from the moment shared between the artist and a participant. Please note, that if you have very thick hair, especially on the templates, EEG-sensors might not make a proper contact with your skin.

How did you end up making this artwork?

I have worked for years with audio and media art and explored, how could technology bring out the inner world of a human. Nature Within came to be from my longing to make the invisible – thoughts, feelings and presence – visible and shareable. My pratique is based on long lasting practice of meditation and an interest in the boundaries between mind, body and environment. The piece was developed in the residency in Outokumpu and in exhibitions in Joensuu and Helsinki, and it reached its form in the interaction with audiences.

What does one-to-one art mean to you as an artist? 

For me, one-to-one art is a way to create meaningful, unique encounters, where the art rises from interaction and presence. Art for one person at a time opens up a possibility for a deeper connection and makes space for personal experience – one that a larger audience cannot offer. I feel that the artist doesn’t create anything, they just find and reveal what’s already there – art is a wave that rolls in all directions.
