Eva Holts: Take my love

Take my love

Take My Love is a performance that explores love stories across different types of relationships — LGBTQ+, military and civilian, joyful and dramatic. During the performance, visitors can choose an object that speaks to them and read or listen to the love story connected to it.

Duration 30min.

What will happen during the performance?

A visitor enters the space, and we introduce ourselves. Then, I invite them to choose any object and listen to the love or relationship story connected to it. I’ll ask whether they would like a suggestion or guidance from me, since the stories vary: some are very sad (and may involve the death of a loved one), while others are more uplifting. So it’s important to talk through their expectations and emotional readiness for the story they will choose.

After the visitor selects an object, they can listen to the audio version of the story via a QR code or read the text version. I will offer help if the visitor prefers me to read the story aloud for them.

Afterwards, the visitor can leave feedback for the person who shared the story, if they wish. They can also take my contact details in case they’d like to send me their own love story later on.

What inspired me to create this research-based project?

I believe it was my own experience of love and the difficulties that come with it. I decided to start collecting stories — very different types of relationships — in order not to feel so alone in a world full of pain. To find joy in other people’s happiness, and to share my own (yes, there will be one story from me as well). I’ve discovered that every person’s life is extraordinary, and people do have something to say and something to share.

In fact, the one-to-one approach is essential in Take My Love. I collect stories through private conversations, always trying to offer an individual approach and to express sincere gratitude to each person who opens up. Similarly, during the performance, it will be important for me to get to know the visitor a little, help them choose a story if needed, and hear their impressions. And even receive their personal story — if they feel like sharing.

In this project, I see myself as a mediator between people’s stories — people who may never meet one another, but whose experiences will be heard.

The work will also be shown at the One-to-One Festival in Oeiras, Portugal in November.
